Dale Adair

2017

Induction:

Dale Adair’s induction into the Crossmen Hall of Fame recognizes his lifelong commitment to the drum corps activity and his lasting contributions to the Crossmen as a charter member, performer, educator, percussion staff member, Board member, judge, alumni supporter, and respected leader in the marching arts.

Growing up in a drum corps family, Dale began his own drum corps journey at the age of twelve, playing snare drum with the Golden Eagles Drum and Bugle Corps. From there, he continued with the 507 Hornets and ultimately became a charter member of the Crossmen in 1975. Dale marched with the corps through his age-out season in 1978, helping establish the early identity, work ethic, and percussion tradition of the newly formed organization.

Following his marching years, Dale remained with the Crossmen for three additional seasons as a member of the percussion staff. His transition from performer to educator reflected both his talent and his commitment to giving back to the corps that had helped shape him. As a teacher, Dale brought creativity, enthusiasm, style, and a deep understanding of the activity to the members he instructed.

Dale’s influence extended well beyond the Crossmen. Over the years, he has served as an instructor and arranger for numerous junior and senior corps, including the P.A.L. Cadets, Madison Scouts, Archer-Epler Musketeers, New York Skyliners, and Reilly Raiders Alumni Corps. He also worked with many Philadelphia-area high school programs, including Bensalem, Hammonton, Father Judge, Haverford, Neshaminy, Eastern, and Archbishop Ryan. Across all of these programs, Dale earned the respect of students and fellow instructors for his musicianship, creativity, teaching style, and positive approach.

In 1983, Dale began what would become a lifelong and highly respected career as a percussion judge. He first served with the National Judges Association for 23 years and then continued that work with the Cavalcade of Bands. Through judging, Dale helped shape and evaluate generations of young performers, bringing the same fairness, knowledge, and passion to the adjudication community that he had brought to the field as a performer and teacher.

Dale also continued to serve the Crossmen in leadership roles, including as a member of the Crossmen Board of Directors in 1993 and 1994. His support for the corps and the Crossmen Alumni Association has remained steady through the years. He has given his time, experience, and energy whenever called upon, including taking the lead with the Play in the Park percussion line for two years, helping keep alumni connected through music, performance, and shared tradition.

Dale’s impact on the broader drum corps community has been recognized at the highest levels. In 2013, he was inducted into the World Drum Corps Hall of Fame, a testament to his decades of service, education, performance, and leadership within the activity.

For his years as a charter member and marching performer, his service on the Crossmen percussion staff, his leadership on the Board of Directors, his lifelong work as an educator and judge, and his continued dedication to the Crossmen Alumni Association, we proudly honor Dale Adair as a member of the Crossmen Hall of Fame Class of 2017.
