Jim Coates
2003
Induction:
Jim Coates’ long-standing commitment to the Crossmen is a powerful reflection of what it means to give back to the organization that helped shape him. His connection to the corps spans multiple chapters — as a marching member, staff member, administrator, and lifelong ambassador for the Crossmen spirit.
From his earliest days with the corps, Jim demonstrated the passion, work ethic, and commitment that would become hallmarks of his career in the drum corps activity. His time as a member gave him a deep appreciation for the values at the heart of the Crossmen: dedication, resilience, teamwork, excellence, and family. Those values continued to guide him as he returned to serve the organization in instructional and administrative roles.
As a staff member and administrator, Jim helped support the corps both on and off the field. His leadership reflected a clear understanding that a successful drum corps is built not only through performance excellence, but through culture, care, organization, and belief in young people. He contributed to the Crossmen during important years in the corps’ history, helping strengthen the foundation for future generations of members.
Jim’s passion for the drum corps activity has always been evident. His influence has extended far beyond one role or one season. In 2010, he joined Carolina Crown as a staff member and continued to grow as a leader within the activity. He would go on to serve as CEO and Executive Director, helping guide one of Drum Corps International’s premier organizations while continuing to represent the values first forged through his Crossmen experience.
His impact has been recognized at the highest levels of the activity. In addition to his 2003 induction into the Crossmen Hall of Fame, Jim is also a member of the Carolina Crown Hall of Fame and the Drum Corps International Hall of Fame — a rare and meaningful recognition of his service, leadership, and lasting influence.
Jim Coates’s legacy is one of loyalty, leadership, and lifelong dedication. He represents the best of what the Crossmen family can produce: a member who became a teacher, a teacher who became an administrator, and an administrator who became one of the respected leaders of the drum corps activity.
For his commitment to the Crossmen, his service to generations of performers, and his lasting impact on the drum corps community, we proudly honor Jim Coates as a member of the Crossmen Hall of Fame.
