Rod Owens

2012

Induction:

Rod Owens’s induction into the Crossmen Hall of Fame recognizes his outstanding service, leadership, and dedication to the corps as an administrator, tour director, mentor, and trusted member of the Crossmen family.

Rod served the Crossmen during years when the behind-the-scenes work of moving a drum corps down the road required extraordinary commitment, patience, and skill. As tour director, he carried responsibilities that were essential to the daily life of the corps: logistics, transportation, scheduling, housing, communication, problem-solving, and the countless details that allowed the members and instructional staff to focus on rehearsal and performance.

In drum corps, the work of a tour director is often invisible when it is done well. Members may never see every decision, phone call, adjustment, emergency, or late-night solution that keeps the corps operating. But they feel the results every day — when the buses arrive, meals happen, housing sites are ready, schedules are clear, and the corps is able to move safely and efficiently from one city to the next. Rod helped provide that structure and stability for the Crossmen.

His leadership also helped strengthen the volunteer culture that sustained the corps. In 1999, Jon Terry approached Rod with the idea of creating a more intentional volunteer coordination role to welcome, organize, and involve parents and supporters. That effort helped build a stronger volunteer network for the Crossmen and became part of the backbone of the organization’s support system.

Rod’s influence reached beyond the logistics themselves. He mentored others in the administrative side of the activity, helping them understand what it takes to support a top-level drum corps from behind the scenes. Those who worked with him saw firsthand the importance of preparation, flexibility, humility, and steady leadership under pressure.

His reputation as a skilled drum corps administrator extended across the activity. In addition to his work with the Crossmen, Rod went on to serve in tour and administrative roles with organizations including Magic of Orlando, the Glassmen, and the Troopers. That broader service speaks to the respect he earned as someone who understood how to move a corps, support its people, and manage the complex demands of summer tour.

For the Crossmen, Rod’s legacy is rooted in service. He helped keep the corps on the road, supported the people who made each season possible, and contributed to the member experience in ways that may not always have been visible from the stands but were deeply important to the life of the organization.

For his leadership as tour director, his commitment to the members and volunteers, his mentorship of future administrators, and his lasting contribution to the Crossmen family, we proudly honor Rod Owens as a member of the Crossmen Hall of Fame.
